Sydney’s largest winter festival kicks off this weekend for a whole month of lights, live music and artistic endeavour. Now the world’s largest festival of light, Vivid Sydney promises citywide illuminations, with stellar light installations mapping the walls of some of the city’s most iconic buildings. The live music and speakers bill is also brimming with an array of incredible local and international acts not to be missed.

An annual celebration of flavour, the Taste of Manly festival has been enticing foodies for more than 32 years and is back again promising another year of local food from neighbourhood eateries and beverages from Australian wineries and breweries. Guests of this beautiful beachfront festival can also enjoy live music from local musicians across six locations. Entry is free, but you’ll want to pick up a wine-tasting ticket – in the form of a glass – for $10.

Formerly known as the Festival of Espresso Martini, the newly named Caffeine Festival will take over the Overseas Passenger Terminal for a three-day bonanza centred on the city's major thirst for coffee cocktails. This year they are broadening horizons and will encompass fine food, coffee experiences, craft spirits and of course, caffeinated tipples. The Caffeine Festival’s opening night coincides with the inaugural lighting of the Opera House sails for the launch of Vivid’s 10th anniversary, so it’s a great time to be out and about in the city.

The indie-folk legend behind classic album The Shepherd’s Dog, Sam Beam aka Iron & Wine opens Vivid Live with his full band, featuring a cascading backdrop and songs from his latest album the trans portative Beast Epic. Four years on from his sold out Sydney Opera House debut, Sam will showcase two intimate performances spanning his 16-year song-writing career – from The Creek Drank the Cradle to breakthrough album The Shepherd’s Dog and last year’s Grammy nominated Beast Epic.

One of the founding members of pioneering rap group N.W.A., Ice Cube is making his Opera House debut as part of Vivid. The LA-based hip hop group’s 1989 album Straight Outta Compton introduced a more political sound to West Coast rap, which has since inspired rappers all over the world to use their lyrics for socio-political change. Ice Cube will perform hit tracks from his solo career as well as N.W.A. cult classics.
