The month that welcomes longed-for spring and kicks off Sydney’s festival season, September is a fan-favourite. There’s a world of Sydney September events that liven up the city, from Italian film festival to a bunch of art-focussed blockbusters, Sydney hums with activity at this time of year. To make your shortlist easier, we’ve rounded up our top five events to attend this September.

Sydney Fringe Festival

Running for the entire month of September, the Sydney Fringe Festival is the ultimate alternative arts and culture festival, showcasing local talent and off-beat art in all its forms, from theatre and comedy to dance and opera. Sprawling across various city venues, Fringe artists push the boundaries of genre, art form and innovation. There are dozens of shows to choose from in the full program, which you can view here -

Italian Film Festival

One of the most loved film festivals of the year, the Lavazza Italian Film Festival highlights the best current and historic films Italy has to offer on the big screen at Palace Cinemas. Running between 11 September and 7 October, movie-goers will have the opportunity to see the best in Italian cinema. Sydney’s Palace Cinemas can be found in Paddington, Chippendale and Leichhardt.

Sydney Contemporary

Australia’s premier international at fair, Sydney Contemporary pops up at Carriageworks in Redfern every year to showcase art from some of the country’s most admired and respected art dealers and retailers. Taking place from the 13-16 September, Sydney Contemporary celebrates three days of curated exhibitions and ambitious programming appealing to the serious collector, art lover and those curious about contemporary art.

Art and About

Throughout the year, Art & About annually celebrates Sydney’s creativity and imagination with art by local and international talent dotted around the city in unusual places. Between 13 September and 7 October, there is a chance to peer into a side of Australian life through the lens of professional and emerging photographers. Australian Life 2018 is a photography competition that will be held in Hyde Park, with the winner taking away $10,000.

Over a weekend in September, the Sydney Opera House presents Antidote, a festival of ideas, action and change with a line-up of remarkable speakers, thinkers and creators. On 1 and 2 September, Antidote unites changemakers at the height of their influence; exploring issues from politics and gender to environmentalism and extremism.
