The Eventful Life

Not for the shrinking violet, this year’s Pantone colour of the year is an ode to innovation, inspiration, and a nod to the feminist movement.

The bold and daring ‘Ultra Violet 18-3838’, is a purple hue described by Pantone as “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful shade”.

For those who like to stay on top of trends, we’ve rounded up our top five tips on how to incorporate this year’s top pick into your event styling in clever and tasteful ways.

The good news is, you can be as loud and visionary or as subtle as you like, adding just a little hint or going wild with your decorations.

A simple way to add a touch of ultra violet to your event colour palette is through floral displays. If you’re planning a wedding, perhaps look to incorporate it into your bouquet; or, for a sit-down or cocktail affair, add it into the table arrangements.

For blushing brides-to-be, consider lilacs, violets or foxgloves for your bouquet. And, for event styling, opt for the bright and beautiful Phalaenopsis orchid that will be sure to catch the eye and create an impact.

A variety of colours complement violet, which may surprise you. If you’re hoping to be a part of this year’s trend, why not set the scene with your invitations – the first hint of your event theming guests will be privy to. Using two tones of purple in the same space creates an incredibly luxurious aesthetic, such as marrying violet with plum, a cool blue purple or warm red purple. Or, pair with grey, olive green, mint green or a dramatic metallic such as gold or silver.

3.Dessert table

Whether you’re opting for a sprawling dessert buffet, individual a la carte plates or even roving sweets canapes, there are plenty of easy ways to purple-up your guilty pleasures offering.

Macarons are a gorgeous little bite that are always known to sport some colour, so why not add a few brightly hued violet ones into the collection.

Or, for smaller delegate meetings, perhaps look into cupcakes or cookies with purple icing.

Custom-designed cocktails are a huge fad right now – so why not work with your events team to create a purple-hued concoction to denote this year’s biggest trend?

There’s an array of violet-coloured spirits and syrups available that could be used in your cocktail to create the right hue, such as Chambord, Blue Curacao, blackberry syrup, purple gin – the list goes on. A few of the more popular purple cocktails include the Purple Haze, the Purple Rain and the Purple People Eater.

Here at InterContinental, our superstar bar team can help with customised cocktails for any event, all you need to do it let them know your requirements and they can devise and plan the ultimate ultra violet juice for you and your guests.

5.Finishing touches

Finally, let’s look at the finishing touches of event styling – the venue set up. These are all the little details and elements that really draw the room or space together and set the scene for the celebration ahead.

For birthday parties, look to incorporate ultra violet through balloons or bunting. For a lavish gala, perhaps weave violet into customised lighting options or on table settings (place names, table numbers etc).

Or, for any event, go all out with florals, lighting, stationary – the whole lot.
